The paper, “Funding for Evangelism and Mission,” emerged from Issue Group #27 at the Lausanne 2004 Conference on World Evangelism in Pattaya, Thailand. E. LeBron Fairbanks co-led Group #27 and co-edited this article.
After briefly discussing the challenges faced in the mission funding arena, the current scene in funding evangelism and mission is discussed. The environment is generally characterized by a vertical top/down arrangement where the money from donors “trickles down” to the recipient organization, school or ministry. The “Trickle Down Giving” is reflected in “The Vertical Model.”
A new model, the “Mutual Commitment” (or Horizontal Model, strongly recommended by Issue Group #27), changes the way giving and receiving is perceived, approved and accomplished. It represents a significant paradigm shift – a horizontal model – that changes the way of giving and receiving.
The new model is best understood in the reorientation of five key concepts within giving and receiving: stewardship, relationship, accountability, dependency, and the role of intermediaries.
The paper concludes with a discussion on implementing the “Mutual Commitment” model.
